More recently, Suncorp has quietly set about revolutionising the industry. It has rolled out 20 so-called Smart shops along the eastern seaboard, already making it one of the globe’s biggest smash repairers.
These heavily automated shops can process up to 150 cars a week and minor damage can be repaired within a day, causing minimal disruption to the policyholder.
Suncorp is looking to save at least $350 a car through this automated production, a potentially significant competitive advantage. Some believe this could be a game changer in the industry and something IAG will have to replicate.
